Cantwell-Sacred Heart 8, Cathedral 3--Pitchers Christian Hernandez and Ray Nuno combined for a two-hitter, and Manny Ciallo had a two-run double to give Cantwell-Sacred Heart an upset win Friday in the first round of the Southern Section Division IV playoffs at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Phantoms carried an eight-game winning streak and hope to use that momentum into the game, but appeared flat after falling behind 3-0 in the second inning.
Hernandez (5-2) struck out 10 and limited Cathedral to two hits in six innings. Nuno retired three of the last four batters.
Luis DeLeon had a triple to center field in fourth and Manny Badillo had a single in the fifth for Cathedral’s only hits.
Phantom right-hander Greg Vidales pitched four innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits and three walks.
“We didn’t play our type of game,” Cathedral Coach Robert Morales said. “Our players were preoccupied with tonight’s school prom.”
