News, Tips & Bargains : U.S. Airline Will Fly to South Africa

The first regular air service between the United States and South Africa aboard a U.S. carrier is scheduled to begin Friday.
USAfrica Airways, the only American company authorized by the Department of Transportation to provide direct service to South Africa, will initially offer two round-trip flights a week between Washington-Dulles International Airport and Jan Smuts International Airport in Johannesburg.
Seats are available on the first flight, which will depart at 6:15 p.m. Friday and follow an 8,000-mile route, with a stop for refueling in the Cape Verde Islands. The introductory fare of $1,400 will be offered through the month. Regular excursion fees, with an 11-day minimum stay and a two-month maximum stay, will range from $1,699 to $1,899.
The airline plans to introduce a third weekly round-trip to Johannesburg sometime in June and in July plans to offer weekly round-trip service to Cape Town.
