Orders for Machine Tools Up: Manufacturers’ orders for American-made machine tools rose 11.7% in April to the highest level in 12 months, according to a survey by the Assn. for Manufacturing Technology. The trade group said machine tool orders were $413.7 million in April, up from $370.4 million in March. Orders were up 18.8% compared with April, 1993. The monthly report covers metal-cutting and metal-forming machine tools, which are used to manufacture goods from household appliances to aircraft engines. Machine tool orders are considered a gauge of economic activity. The most significant rise in orders was in foreign markets.
