Ireland Hands Germany First Loss at Home in Six Years

Only 19 days before the World Cup opener, defending champion Germany was shocked, 2-0, by Ireland on Sunday at Hanover, the German’s first loss at home in six years.
Tony Cascarino and Gary Kelly scored for Ireland, which beat Germany for the first time in 34 years. Germany hadn’t lost at home since June 21, 1988, when the Netherlands won, 2-1, at Hamburg in the semifinals of the European Championship.
It was the third consecutive victory over a World Cup team for Ireland, a 1990 quarterfinalist that was coming off 1-0 victories over the Netherlands and Bolivia.
In other games, Mexico beat Ajax Amsterdam, 2-1, at Mexico City, and Colombia defeated European club champion AC Milan, 2-1, before 57,724 fans at the Orange Bowl in Miami as Faustino Asprilla scored in the 26th minute and Freddie Rincon added another goal seven minutes later.
Basketball
Magic Johnson scored 32 points and pulled down nine rebounds before 13,000 in Tokyo as his team of touring all-stars beat Japan’s national team, 114-94, to sweep a four-game series. Kurt Rambis had 16 points.
Baseball
Rancho Santiago, trying to win a second consecutive state community college baseball title, faces Cypress for the state championship today at Cerritos College. Game time is 11 a.m. If Cypress wins, there will be a second game.
Rancho Santiago (40-11) advanced to the title game with a 16-3 victory Sunday over Lassen, getting home runs from Joe Fraser, Daryle Ward and Darren Troilo. Cypress (41-11) came through the losers’ bracket, beating Chabot, 9-4, and Lassen, 4-2, on Sunday.
Cypress won the state title in 1991 and won consecutive titles in 1973-74-75.
Miscellany
Leroy Burrell overcame a slow start to beat Germany’s Marc Blume in the 100 meters in 10.24 seconds at an international meet in Arnsberg, Germany. The Santa Monica Track Club 400-meter relay team, which includes Burrell and Carl Lewis, withdrew because of an injury to Mike Marsh.
Second-seeded Barbara Fontana of Hermosa Beach and Lori Kotas-Forsythe of Encinitas upset top-seeded Karolyn Kirby and Liz Masakayan, both of San Diego, 15-12, in the final of the Reebok Myrtle Beach Open beach at the Kingston Plantation in South Carolina.
Kirby and Masakayan had won the last 13 Coors Light Women’s Pro Beach Volleyball events.
Names in the News
George J. Melinkovich, 82, of Pacific Palisades, former football coach at St. Monica High in Santa Monica, died at his home Friday. Melinkovich was an All-American fullback at Notre Dame in 1932.
