CRENSHAW : Repairs Begin at Angeles Mesa Library

A groundbreaking ceremony last week marked the beginning of renovation construction at the historic Angeles Mesa library, 2400 W. 52nd St.
Opened in 1928, the California Renaissance-style facility will undergo earthquake reinforcement and be expanded about 20% to 6,000 square feet, said Robert Reagan, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Public Library system. The original building was deemed seismically unsafe by the city and ordered closed in 1992.
Temporary quarters were set up at Angeles Mesa Elementary School, 2611 W. 52nd St., which is open 12:30 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Saturdays, and 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays.
Construction, scheduled for completion in late 1995, will include a new multipurpose room, an automated circulation system and computerized catalogues, and several public artworks. Funds for the renovations were made possible by passage of the 1989 state library bond issue and through Housing and Community Development Block Grant funds.
