Two Inmates Die During Melee Inside Connecticut Prison

ENFIELD, Conn. — Club-wielding inmates wearing makeshift hoods attacked other inmates during a prison yard melee that left two prisoners dead and at least six others injured, authorities said.
Two of the injured were in critical condition Wednesday. Two guards also suffered minor injuries during the fighting Tuesday in the recreation area of the medium-security Carl Robinson Correctional Institution.
About 200 of the prison’s 1,600 inmates were in the yard when some prisoners apparently fashioned hoods from their T-shirts and chased down others with sticks and makeshift clubs. One inmate was swinging a crutch.
State corrections spokesman Bill Flower said officials did not know what caused the fight.
