NORWALK : Plans for Hindu Temple Approved by Council

Nearly two years after it first rejected plans by a Hindu congregation to build a temple, the City Council this week approved a vastly redesigned place of worship.
The $1.2-million temple will be built at the corner of Pioneer Boulevard and Ferina Avenue, and will look much like a Spanish mission, complete with curved archways and red tiles. The original design, turned down in 1992, included elaborate Hindu carvings and other elements of a classic Hindu temple, said Natoo Patel, a congregation spokesman.
“We had to make a lot of concessions, but we wanted to show that we could be good neighbors,” Patel said.
The congregation bought the property in 1991 for $630,000. A dilapidated building on the site will be demolished to make room for the two-story temple, Patel said.
