Low Fat Memories

Carol Isaak Barden’s well-written article, “Low Fat Desert” (July 3), brought back many memories of when I discovered Rancho La Puerta in the early ‘60s.
A friend had recommended the ranch as an ideal place for a rest. After spending a week there, I was totally addicted. For $125 a week, per person, we got a small cottage with a fireplace, three good meals (mostly vegetarian), one massage and a facial a day.
Soon after, we started going down for weekends whenever we could. Those weekends were not as restful as they should have been, as we spent many Saturday evenings at the local pub, sneaking back in long past curfew. They have since built a guarded gate and their rates have been inflated to the point of making it available only to the super-rich. Sad!
