Commerce Council OKs $30.6-Million Budget

The Commerce City Council last week approved a $30.6-million budget for fiscal 1995 that includes an allocation of nearly 40% for public safety programs.
The council approved spending $11.8 million to cover the city’s contracts with the county sheriff’s and fire departments, to develop a comprehensive emergency preparedness program and to hire community safety specialists who will focus on crime-prevention activities, city spokeswoman Judy Rambeau said.
Parks maintenance and recreation programs account for 22.7% of the budget, or $6.96 million. The city maintains four parks and community centers, a senior citizens center and a mountain camp, and operates sports and recreation programs year-round for residents and business employees. Social services programs, which include gang-prevention efforts, are included in the parks and recreation portion of the budget.
The council also allocated $1.8 million to cover operating costs and salaries at its central library and two branch libraries.
