ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ISLAND by Yvonne Nelson Perry (John Daniel & Co.: $10; 107 pp., paperback original). Perry’s sketchy stories explore the experiences of Asian-Americans in modern Hawaii. A cock fight becomes a metaphor for the rivalry between an old man and his daughter’s lover in “The Main Event;” in “Taming Unseen Dragons,” a woman ends the misery she and her husband have endured since he contracted leprosy. At times, Perry’s choices seem a bit obvious, e.g. when she juxtaposes the suffering of humans and humpback whales in “After Birth,” but most of the stories suggest a promising talent.
