DANA POINT — A 47-year-old man who drowned in the ocean near Dana Point Harbor was identified Saturday as Ronald Petros of Anchorage, Alaska.
Petros was swimming about 30 yards off a rock jetty near the harbor with his 18- and 15-year-old sons about 3 p.m. Friday, when the trio became caught in a riptide, said an Orange County Sheriff’s Department spokesman.
A 911 call from a witness sent a Dana Point Harbor Patrol launch to the area and all three swimmers were rescued, but Petros was later declared dead at a local hospital.
Petros had been visiting relatives in Laguna Hills with his wife and children, according to a spokesman at the Orange County coroner’s office.
