BRIEFLY : State Government: Assembly OKs Computer Bill

Westside Assemblywoman Debra Bowen (D-Marina del Rey) has won Assembly support for a bill intended to ensure that state agencies don’t waste public funds when purchasing computers.
Bowen’s bill, which has won Assembly approval and is scheduled to be considered in the Senate next week, would create a peer review body to consult with state agencies buying computers. The measure would also place a moratorium on future computer acquisitions until the review body can examine them.
On Wednesday, a state auditor’s report found that the Department of Motor Vehicles wasted $50 million on a failed computer system.
