Indians Release Ailing Pitcher so He Can Get Paid

CLEVELAND — Pitcher Matt Turner, who continues to undergo chemotherapy treatments for Hodgkin’s disease, was released Wednesday by the Cleveland Indians so that he can receive the remainder of his contract, a team official said.

Turner, acquired in an April 3 trade with the Florida Marlins, pitched for the Indians and their triple-A team in Charlotte, N.C., before being found to have the disease on May 25.

“Matt is still undergoing his treatments, and his wife Kathy is expecting their third child,” said Indian General Manager John Hart. “This allows us to pay him the remainder of his contract. Matt is still very much a part of the Cleveland Indians.”

The team and Turner are discussing terms of a contract for the 1995 season, Hart said.
