Oregon Steel to Build One Mill, Close Another: The Portland company said it will build a $180-million combination mill and close its plate mill facility in Fontana, Calif., resulting in the loss of about 100 jobs and a charge of about $14 million, about $13 million of it related to the write-off of production supplies and property, plant and equipment. The company said it will close the facility by the end of the year due to its high operating costs, depressed pricing in the international large-diameter pipe market and the lack of domestic pipeline activity. The combination mill is subject to financing. If negotiations with a Portland public utility are successful, the new mill will be located there, Oregon Steel Mills Inc. said. If not, other locations will be considered.
