Extension Likely on Free Debris Removal

The city of Los Angeles is likely to extend its free earthquake debris removal program through Jan. 17, a city official said Friday.
Project manager Andres Santamaria of the Public Works Department said the Federal Emergency Management Agency has verbally agreed to extend the program, currently scheduled to end Sept. 30.
FEMA has already committed $110 million to the program. Extending it through the first anniversary of the Northridge temblor would cost the agency an additional $70 million, Santamaria said.
The city will make a formal announcement about the extension Tuesday.
“We’re very relieved because there is a real need for this type of extension,” Santamaria said.
