BETHANY BEACH, Del. — A windblown beach umbrella smacked Gov. Thomas R. Carper in the head, opening a gash that needed 14 stitches.
The umbrella, yanked from the sand by strong winds, went hurtling along the shore Friday, grazing the neck of Carper’s 4-year-old son, Benjamin, before hitting the governor on his forehead.
Sunbathers went to help Carper, as did beach patrol members, who applied a cold compress. Martha Carper drove her husband to get medical attention.
