Long Beach City College has been awarded a $1.7-million federal grant for programs to help underachieving students stay in school.
The grant from the Department of Education will pay for programs to evaluate and help students needing assistance in basic math, reading or writing. According to college officials, 85% of incoming students are not ready for college-level English courses, 67% need help with reading skills and 84% need instruction in basic math. Last fall, 4,400 students were placed on probation or were dismissed. College enrollment was about 24,000.
As part of the effort, counselors will line up tutoring for students and will keep track of students’ progress. Groups of students also will be assigned to the same classes and encouraged to study together.
Faculty members will receive training about the many cultures at the school.
