McCutcheon Leads Bishop Amat : Prep football: He scores five touchdowns in his tailback debut to help beat Carson, 34-7.

It was quite a debut at tailback for Daylon McCutcheon.

The Bishop Amat High senior tailback rushed for 253 yards and scored five touchdowns while leading the top-ranked Lancers to a 34-7 victory over visiting Carson in a nonleague football game Friday.

“I’m still learning the position,” said the modest McCutcheon, who previously had been a standout receiver and defensive back for Amat. “I told my line, ‘You take care of me, and I’ll take care of you.’ ”

In that sense, it would be hard to find more caring teammates.

It was easy to see what kind of night McCutcheon, son of former Ram running back Lawrence McCutcheon, would have from the first time he touched the ball, when he took a handoff to his left and ran 76 yards for a touchdown.

He carried the ball five times in the first half and scored three touchdowns to give Bishop Amat (1-0) a 21-7 lead.

“Why didn’t I give him the ball more?” said Tom Salter, Bishop Amat’s first-year coach. “Heck, we only had it for 13 plays in the first half--Carson is a good team. We always want to get him the ball as much as possible.”

Seventh-ranked Carson (0-1) scared Amat early when Eric Davis ran the opening kickoff back 94 yards, apparently for a touchdown. However, the play was called back because of a clipping penalty.

Carson managed to control the ball for nearly 14 minutes of the first half, but mistakes proved costly.

Still, it was enough to cause Salter some anxiety. “Really, I’m just glad the first one is over,” he said.

Salter took over the program this season from the highly successful Mark Peredes, who left to coach at Riverside North.
