Countywide : Volunteers Honored at 2nd Literacy Day
- Share via
Participants in the READ/Orange County literacy program were honored at the “Learner Recognition and Celebration” held Sunday at the Old County Courthouse in Santa Ana. This second annual event was also an observance of International Literacy Day.
People who have been with the reading program for at least one year received certificates of commendation from the California Legislature, provided by Assemblyman Tom Umberg (D-Garden Grove).
Since 1992, READ/Orange County has been training volunteer literacy tutors who provide free, one-on-one instruction to adults interested in developing basic reading and writing skills.
The program is conducted in the 27 branches of the Orange County library system.
Currently, there are about 150 tutor-student matches in the county.
There is a particular need for more tutors in Garden Grove, La Palma, Stanton and Westminster, said Steve Brewster, adult services coordinator of the Orange County Public Library.
