St. Paul 30, Garfield 6--St. Paul heeded Coach Marijon Ancich’s pregame warning to play hard to overcome Garfield’s size and speed in a rare City Section-Southern Section match.
It was Ancich’s 20th victory against City teams in 21 games and the veteran coach’s 263rd career win.
Ancich saw running back Elton Gabourel as the key: “We’ll see if he can keep up with these guys.” Gabourel kept up, rushing for 79 yards and a touchdown.
Garfield posted 127 yards of total offense, but its defense was strong despite the lopsided loss, allowing only 172 total yards.
Garfield’s score came with less than three minutes left in the game, when backup quarterback Sal Limon connected with Rudy Burruel for a 13-yard touchdown pass.
Next week: Garfield at Huntington Park.
