VENTURA : New Resolution on Prop. 187 Approved

Putting financial and legal concerns ahead of humanitarian arguments, the Ventura school board has approved a resolution opposing Proposition 187 that is substantially different than the statement it initially considered.
The board voted 5 to 0 to oppose the November ballot measure that would deny public education, non-emergency health care and other social services to illegal immigrants. But the unanimous vote came only after the board agreed to revise the resolution it had considered two weeks before.
The board initially discussed a resolution opposing the measure because “it is in the best interest of the general public to educate all children, citizens or undocumented immigrants, when considering the alternative cost to the taxpayer if they are not provided this opportunity.”
