Pond’s ‘Video Arch’ Wins Anaheim Award

The Pond in Anaheim, which commissioned internationally known video artist Nam June Paik’s “Video Arch” for its lobby, will be one of eight recipients Tuesday of the seventh annual Anaheim Art in Public Places awards.

The awards recognize businesses, institutions and agencies that offer publicly accessible places for artists to display work, funded privately or publicly or in partnership with the city arts council.

Other winners are:

* The Anaheim Union High School District, for restoration of the 1936 WPA murals saved from Fremont Junior High School, and for creation of a contemporary mural for the district’s board room.

* The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, for “Wild Wing,” sculpture by Stephen Landis.

* Luigi’s Restaurant at 801 S. State College Blvd., for interior murals by the late Elaine Kennedy.

* St. Boniface Church at 120 N. Janss St., for various sculpture and murals.

* Citrus Park on Atchison Street, for exterior murals by Emigdio Vasquez re-creating orange crate labels.

* Paul Kott, Realtor at 1225 W. Lincoln Ave., for “Anaheim,” a mixed-media lobby piece by Michael Bryan.

* Anaheim Plaza, which opens Nov. 18 at Euclid Street and Crescent Drive, for restoring a bronze tower from the old Robinson’s department store and for the “Tile Wall,” a public art project.

The Laguna Art Museum board has voted to increase its potential number of members from 37 to 50, and has named 12 new members.

Two are art collectors--Marcel Vinh of Los Angeles (California Impressionist and abstract art) and Diana Zotnick of Studio City (contemporary art). Another new member, Sally Waranch, directs the Sarah Bain Gallery in Brea.

The others are: Robert Pelton, president of Pelton & Associates, Redondo Beach; Mike Salisbury, president of Mike Salisbury Communication, Torrance; Jim Stein, group president of diversified services at Fluor Daniel Inc., Irvine; civic leaders Irene Mathews of Newport Beach, Grace Narver of Laguna Beach and Judy Sherratt of Huntington Beach; Michael Crow, chairman of Highland Capital, San Diego; Gary Dapelo, a partner in the law firm of Good, Wildman, Hegness & Walley of Newport Beach; and Pat Flanigan, an executive vice president with Taco Bell in Irvine.

The Newport Harbor Art Museum’s 42-member board of trustees has elected James V. Selna president; he succeeds Joan Beall. Selna, senior litigation partner in the Newport Beach office of O’Melveny & Myers, represented the museum in its successful suit challenging a National Endowment for the Arts requirement that grantees sign an anti-obscenity oath.

Other newly elected officers are James B. Pick, director of the Information Management Program at the University of Redlands (vice president, art and education); Jan C. Harzan, an executive with IBM (vice president, planning and budget), Alison Baker Frenzel, longtime museum supporter (secretary) and J. Steven Roush, a partner in the accounting firm of Coopers & Lybrand, Newport Beach (treasurer).

Robert Baird, chief of staff at the Irvine Medical Center, and Barbara Klein, a children’s librarian and docent council member, were elected to the board for four-year terms.
