North Denies Lying About Iran-Contra

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — Oliver L. North denied on Tuesday that he lied to Congress about the Iran-Contra affair. He conceded later that he didn’t tell the whole truth.
“The press said I lied, but the jury said I didn’t,” the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate and former White House aide told students at Falls Church High School.
North, who is running against Democratic Sen. Charles S. Robb, conceded after his address that he misled Congress. “I acknowledged in (an) informal off-the-record meeting with a handful of members of one committee and some staff that I had not told them everything they wanted to know,” he said.
North was convicted in 1989 of aiding and abetting an obstruction of Congress, altering and destroying classified documents and accepting an illegal gratuity. The convictions were overturned on appeal.
