Kathryn (Kitty) Cohen has been promoted from vice president of finance for Prime Ticket to general manager of the regional sports cable network.
Cohen, who becomes one of the highest-ranking female executives in sports television, replaces Roger Werner, who served as president of Prime Ticket for two years.
Werner left the company in August when the sale of Prime Ticket Tele-Communications, Inc. (TCI) was completed. Werner, who was the president of ESPN before coming to Prime Ticket, continues to work for Bill Daniels, the former owner of Prime Ticket, as the head of a new programming ventures business.
The announcement of Cohen’s appointment as the new head of Prime Ticket was made Tuesday by Ed Frazier, the president of Texas-based Liberty Sports, a division of TCI and the new parent company of Prime Ticket.
“Kitty has played an integral role in the network’s development and was selected after a thorough review of internal and external executives,” Frazier said.
Dick Barron, who was brought in by Liberty as acting general manager after the sale of Prime Ticket, will continue to serve as a consultant to Liberty Sports in his role as president of TransMedia Communications.
Cohen, a 1982 graduate of Colorado State with a degree in business administration who is also a certified public accountant, worked for Daniels & Associates in Denver before Daniels brought her to Prime Ticket in 1988 as the network’s finance controller. In 1989, she was promoted to vice president of finance.
Cohen said she doesn’t foresee any personnel changes at Prime Ticket. “The staff we now have in place is excellent,” she said.
Cohen said there are talks involving expansion of the network’s popular news show, “Press Box,” possibly adding a 7 o’clock edition to the regular 10 o’clock edition and also farming it out nationally to other Liberty regional sports networks.
Said Werner: “Kitty was a great chief financial officer and she undoubtedly will make an excellent general manager for Prime Ticket.”
