CLAS Test Veto
Gov. Pete Wilson’s veto of the CLAS program for public schools panders to the radical right. The governor’s own appointed Board of Education unanimously recommended extending the testing. The CLAS testing was a key ingredient for improving public schools. Now California is left without an accountable assessment system of its students.
I think this is a transparent attempt to further diminish public education in California, which is the agenda for those who would prefer state vouchers to subsidize private schools. We can only hope that a future governor will have more moral courage and concern about the quality of California’s schools.

* It is ironic that Gov. Wilson vetoed the CLAS test. After three years of attempting to destroy public education through under-financing, he has dismantled the only test that accurately measured his success.
