OUTLOOK
Yoshimura enters his second season with possibly even more strife than his first. Like last year, he has to replace all five starters again, but this time he doesn’t have 11 seniors to choose from as replacements. “We have to replace 88% of our scoring, 87% of our rebounding and 87% of our assists,” Yoshimura said. “And we have little varsity experience.” Adding to Valencia’s woes, two of Yoshimura’s returning players--Gray and Secoda--are busy with football playoffs. Gray (5.2 points) and Secoda (1.1) are being counted on to become the team’s main scorers. Hoping to ease the burden is Gamboa, a transfer from El Dorado. “A real slasher,” Yoshimura said of Gamboa. “When the game starts, he’s real tough and doesn’t back down. He will get minutes.” To win the league title again would border on miraculous, but the playoffs are a realistic goal. Still, Yoshimura--like a couple of other Orange League coaches--may need all of the nonleague games to figure out what works.
