Students, Senior Citizens Share Ideas
Elaine J. Boe is among the senior citizens participating in Project Share, a program designed to promote lifelong learning and understanding between seniors and students in elementary and high schools.
“Today’s teens may look and act differently than we did in my generation, but they are still the same underneath,” Boe said.
Project Share began three years ago in community schools with senior volunteers helping out with one-on-one tutoring. Now the program has expanded, with the seniors also listening to students read, helping in classrooms with special projects and providing support services in school offices.
Students, in turn, tutor their elderly friends in computers and assist with projects such as the building of the Senior King and Queen float for the annual Fourth of July Parade.
“Project Share is one of my favorite projects. I feel young while working with these children,” Boe says. “It keeps me in tune with what is happening in their young lives.”
Seniors interested in volunteering can call Vicky Daniels, Project Share coordinator, at (714) 536-5548.
