Wait a minute. USC, ranked 17th, beats the nation’s third-ranked team and Big Ten champion but is not mentioned in the headline. The Trojans win by nine, the widest margin of Coach John Robinson’s four Rose Bowl victories, and the subhead tells us they “barely outscored Northwestern.”

Even a UCLA alum like myself can well understand that it wasn’t only Robinson who thought he was reading the Chicago Tribune instead of our local paper.

USC deserves much better.

As I recall contentedly, nervously, hysterically and triumphantly occupying my allotted one square foot of Rose Bowl seating on Jan. 1, I still can’t believe I was there.

What do they do in Oregon on Jan. 1?

Wonder if anything like this happens when the Bruins rent the place?

I’m a dyed-in-the-wool Bruin fan who gets her jollies whenever anybody beats USC. But let’s be fair. No. 17 beat No. 3 and was the only Western team to win a bowl game.

The choice of topics The Times chose to write about USC the week before the Rose Bowl game were amazing. “Robo Flop?” A recovering alcoholic?

Why must The Times keep pointing out the shortcomings of USC, as if no other team had any. Get over it.
