Cal Turns Defensive for Victory

California has won most of its games this season with a high-scoring offense that features freshman Shareef Abdur-Rahim. On Sunday, when the Bears and Abdur-Rahim went cold, they turned to defense to defeat DePaul, 62-59, at San Jose.
While the Bears made only 37% of their shots, the Blue Demons were even worse--shooting 35%. And Cal held DePaul center Bryant Bowden below double figures for the first time this season.
Abdur-Rahim had 13 points, well below his season average of nearly 24, and 13 rebounds as Cal (12-6) handed DePaul (7-13) its 10th consecutive loss.
Tremaine Fowlkes had 13 points for Cal, which averages more than 80 points. The Bears had lost their previous two games.
Stanford 83, Seton Hall 60--Dion Cross scored 23 points and Brevin Knight had 11 of his 13 points in the second half as the Cardinal (13-5) pulled away for its fifth victory in a row in the second game of a doubleheader at San Jose. Seton Hall fell to 10-9.
