Police shot to death two leaders of the military wing of the Gamaa al Islamiya (Islamic Group) in the southern province of Sohag, security sources said. They said a police patrol saw the men going into a house Tuesday afternoon in the village of Zouk el Gharbiya, 250 miles south of Cairo, and that a firefight broke out when the police tried to arrest them. The Interior Ministry identified the two militants as Mahmoud Abdallah and Ali Sutouhi and said that both were wanted for killing police officers and planting bombs in banks in southern Egypt. Inside the house, police found forged identification papers, anti-government leaflets, an automatic rifle, a pistol and a draft of a statement on the bomb attack against the Egyptian Embassy in Pakistan in November, the ministry said.
