BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : Expos’ Fassero Wins Arbitration

Jeff Fassero became the fourth consecutive player to win at arbitration, getting a $2.8-million salary. The Montreal Expos had offered Fassero $2 million, a raise of $500,000 after he went 13-14 with a 4.33 ERA in 30 starts. . . . Pitcher Terry Mulholland has agreed to a minor league contract with his old team, the Philadelphia Phillies. Mulholland, 32, was 5-13 last year with the San Francisco Giants. . . . The Pittsburgh Pirates signed left-hander Zane Smith, 35, a key pitcher with the National League East championship teams of 1990-92 but an ineffective starter and reliever for Boston last season, when he was 8-8 with a 5.61 ERA in 21 starts. . . . Infielder Jeff Kent and the New York Mets avoided salary arbitration when they agreed to a $1.96-million, one-year contract. . . . Pitcher Mike Moore has been invited to spring training by the St. Louis Cardinals, reuniting another former Oakland player with Manager Tony La Russa. Moore, 36, was 5-15 with a 7.53 ERA in 25 starts last season for Detroit. . . . Cleveland Indian pitcher Jack McDowell was in a minor traffic accident in Florida, but was not hurt, the team said.
