Nontoxic Fumes Force Evacuation Near Anaheim Plant

ANAHEIM — Fumes created by an unexpected chemical reaction at a metal-plating business Saturday forced firefighters to evacuate nearby stores and homes for several hours, fire officials said.
The day’s high temperatures caused some chemicals used in the plate-making process to dry out faster than anticipated and created “off-gassing,” emitting clouds of nontoxic fumes near Superior Plating at 1901 E. Cerritos Ave., a Fire Department dispatcher said.
The chemicals were “legal and safe,” and the evacuation was done as a precautionary measure, the dispatcher said.
