Nation IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Bailey Delivers Stock but Remains Jailed

F. Lee Bailey gave a federal court in Tallahassee, Fla., 400,000 shares of stock he claims was payment from a drug-dealer client, but remained in jail for contempt because the judge in the case was out of town. Bailey, whose clients have included O.J. Simpson, Patty Hearst and the Boston Strangler, has been jailed on a contempt charge since March 6 for failing to surrender the stock. In a motion, Bailey’s lawyer said the stock had been turned over to the court and asked for Bailey’s release. But U.S. District Judge Maurice Paul, at a conference all week in Memphis, Tenn., sent word that he would consider the matter at a hearing at 10 a.m. Monday--no sooner.
