Nation IN BRIEF : UTAH : Bill to Ban Gay Clubs in Schools Is OKd
- Share via
The state Legislature voted to ban gay student clubs in high schools to prevent homosexuals from “recruiting” others into “a lifestyle that can kill them.” The bill cleared the Senate, 21 to 7, and the House, 47 to 21. It is the only one of its kind in the nation to pass, said Jensie Anderson of the Utah chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. Republican Gov. Mike Leavitt is expected to sign it. The issue of gay clubs in Utah high schools erupted last year when students at a Salt Lake City school formed a Gay-Straight Alliance. The school board reacted by banning all school-sponsored extracurricular organizations.
