As someone who has been covering the video market for 10 years, I need to clear up some misconceptions presented by Donald Liebenson in his coverage of bargain videos (“At That Price, You Might as Well Buy,” April 14).
First, even though “Babe” and “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh” might be available for less than $20, they have been retail priced at $22.98 and $26.98 respectively. Second, while major hit titles have been available for less than $10 before now, they were usually released by companies like Starmaker and Good Times and were recorded in the LP (long play) mode.
The reason real video collectors are snatching up these $10 titles now is because they’re being released by the original distributor and recorded in the SP (standard play) mode. Who would want to own a grainy LP copy of “Taxi Driver” from Good Times when they can own a pristine SP copy from Columbia/TriStar Home Video? The answer is obvious.
