Cal State Fullerton Splits Doubleheader

Forced to play two games Saturday after Friday’s rainout, Cal State Fullerton split a doubleheader with San Jose State at Municipal Stadium in San Jose.
In the first game, Titan starter Brent Billingsley improved his record to 10-0 with a four-hitter in a 3-1 victory. Billingsley gave up four hits, walked two and struck out nine.
In the second game, the Spartans (24-22, 5-9) roughed up Scott Hild for five runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings and Cal State Fullerton (38-5, 11-3) could not catch up, losing, 6-4.
Mark Kotsay drove in two runs and Tony Martinez hit his seventh home run.
In another Big West Conference game:
Nevada 5, Long Beach 4--Andy Dominique’s single scored David Brown from second base to win the game for Nevada (27-17) in the bottom of the ninth inning. Long Beach State (23-14) had tied the game in the top of the ninth.
In Big West Conference softball:
CS Fullerton 2-6, Pacific 1-4--Brandi Isgar’s seventh-inning double scored Julie Williams to win the game for CS Fullerton (36-19, 14-8).
Isgar hit her third home run of the season in the second game to lead the Titans.
In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:
Southern California College 26, Biola 3 (5, mercy)--Angela Wolf was five for five with seven RBIs and scored two runs in a first-game rout for Southern California College (23-19-2, 11-5).
The Vanguards won the second game by forfeit.
In nonconference softball:
Chapman 11-8, Riverside 3-0--Christi Guidorizzi (18-3) threw a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts as the Panthers (28-7) swept a doubleheader from Riverside.
Chapman won the first game, 11-3.
At the Long Beach State Track and Field Invitational:
Long Beach State wins six--Freshman Lewis Young won the men’s 400 meters with a time of 47.27 for host team Long Beach State. Long Beach’s Chris Kanowsky won the javelin (202-10) and BenRa Williams won the triple jump (44-10 1/4).
Kristy Kierulff won the women’s high jump with a season-best of 5-9 3/4. Jennifer Peyton set a 49er school record with her 9-4 jump to win the pole vault.
Long Beach State’s 1,600 relay team also won.
In the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation playoffs:
Cal State Northridge 3, Long Beach State 1--Martin Wagner had 28 kills and Tom Hoff added 26 kills, but Long Beach State (21-6) was eliminated in the quarterfinals, 9-15, 15-4, 8-15, 5-15.
