In Order of Delivery, Diving Dumais Brothers Deliver Sweep

The Dumais brothers from Buena High turned in a trifecta at the Southern Section Division I diving championships Wednesday at Heritage Aquatic Complex in Irvine.

They not only finished 1-2-3, they did so in order, by age.

Older brother Justin Dumais scored 692.15 points, breaking his own section record of 649.70 set last year. He also had the highest single-dive score, receiving 89 points for a reverse 1 1/2 somersault and a 3 1/2 twist on his final effort.

Sophomore Troy Dumais finished second with 684.85 points and Brice Dumais, a freshman, took third with 537.25. Charles Law of Newbury Park finished fourth with 456.35 points. Erik Patton of Westlake was sixth with 431.35.

In the girls’ competition, Alexis Sowa of Thousand Oaks was fifth with 448.55 points. Kristen Marquis, a freshman from Santa Margarita, won the competition with 509.30 points.

No grudges: Whether or not his team defeats Saddleback College in the Southern California baseball regional best-of-three series being held today and Saturday, Pierce Coach Bob Lofrano at least will be among friends.

Lofrano, in his sixth season with the Brahmas, is buddies with Gaucho Coach Jack Hodges.

Their friendship began in 1988 when they co-coached a high school all-star team that toured Japan. Lofrano was then the coach at Chatsworth High and Hodges at Laguna Hills.

Among the players on that team were two former Chatsworth standouts, pitcher Derek Wallace, now in the New York Mets’ organization, and third baseman Joel Wolfe, now in the St. Louis Cardinals’ chain.

“We’ve become real good friends,” Lofrano said.

The Gauchos eliminated Pierce last season in the second round of the regional so Lofrano wouldn’t mind returning the favor. But it won’t be a grudge match. “When you are playing against a good friend, you always want your team to do well, but there’s no revenge thing,” Lofrano said.

Busted: A magic bus? Not exactly.

But the Thousand Oaks High boys’ volleyball team would ride it again.

The Lancers were on their way to a recent match against Simi Valley when their bus conked out.

Making matters worse, there was no air conditioning, the temperature was in the 90s and . . .

“I was wearing long sleeves,” Coach James Park said. “It was murder.”

Another bus came to pick up the Lancers, who remained cool enough to sweep Simi Valley.

Honors

Catcher Robert Fick and pole-vaulter Pam Delano were selected as Cal State Northridge student-athletes of the month for April. Fick, a 6-foot-1 junior, played in 17 of the baseball team’s 18 games last month and had 19 hits, six home runs and 22 runs batted in. He also had a record-breaking performance against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, hitting a home run in each of his four at-bats. Delano, a 5-5 senior, cleared the 11-3 3/4 mark at the California-Nevada championships to win the pole vault event. She is currently ranked 16th in the United States.
