THE TREE FARM: Replanting a Life by Robert Treuer, illustrations by Sandra Sandholm Reischel (Hungry Mind: $14; 249 pp.). In a classic midlife crisis, Truer quit his job as a union official and began raising pine trees for lumber and pulp in northern Minnesota. With wry good humor, he chronicles his successes and failures as he learns to plant, raise and harvest thousands of trees. Watching the winter sunset tint the snow and ice, he reflects, “My farm has many colors, even if the green of money is sometimes scarce.”
