Jack’s Back: Two weeks after suffering a minor heart attack, Ventura Mayor Jack Tingstrom is feeling fit and ready to don a cap and gown for graduation ceremonies at the University of La Verne. . . . On Sunday, Tingstrom, 60, will receive a bachelor’s degree in public administration. “I am getting excited,” the mayor said. “It has kept my mind going.” . . . He underwent surgery on May 12 and has been resting at home.

Gym-Dandy: John Ouellet liked the idea of a gymnasium in El Rio the first time he heard it (B1). So as president of the Los Angeles-based Weingart Foundation, he had no problem promising $100,000 to help build the facility if community members can raise the rest of the money for construction. . . . “We’re interested in projects that benefit low-income communities and low-income families,” he said.

On the Job: The Rev. Luther McCurtis is at it again. The pastor at the Total Life Christian Center in Ventura is hosting another barbecue to raise money for his 27-year-old job placement center. . . . The fund-raiser--which starts at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Bible Fellowship Church, 6950 Ralston St.--helps pay to staff the center. “The money for this place doesn’t come from the government, so it keeps me scratching,” he said.

Olympic Goals: Shawn Hindy is one step away from his Olympic dream, having earned a place as an alternate on the U.S. national field hockey team for the Atlanta games. . . . In the meantime, he is staying sharp by playing in the 25th annual California Cup (C10), which began Friday at Moorpark College. . . . Hindy, 20, of Westlake Village, scored two goals to help the Americans defeat the Punjab Olympians on Friday.
