Annual Lake Regatta Prepares to Set Sail

More than 100 skippers from all over Southern California will be sailing on Westlake Lake on Sunday, vying for the Westlake Cup.
Registration costs $5, and is open to anyone with a sailboat under 18 feet. It will take place from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The race will begin at 12:45 p.m.
The Westlake Cup was donated to the Westlake Yacht Club by the American Hawaiian Development Corp., the builders of the Westlake community and man-made Westlake Lake, which was designed with small sailboats in mind.
Bill Ficker, the former skipper of the Intrepid and defender of the 1970 America’s Cup, organized the lake’s first regatta in 1969.
He remains an honorary member of the Westlake Yacht Club.
In addition to the cup, competition will be intense for the Brass Candlestick Award. That is the prize for the most attractive table decoration following the regatta.
