Kim Mortensen
SCHOOL: Thousand Oaks
SPORT: Track and field
YEAR: Senior
SEASON AT A GLANCE: The UCLA-bound Mortensen has followed a superb cross-country season, one that included a victory in the national championships, with an even better track campaign. She ran a national-leading 4 minutes 44.9 seconds in the 1,600 meters at the Arcadia Invitational in April and set a national record of 9:48.59 in the 3,200 Friday night in the Southern Section Masters Meet at Cerritos College.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Mortensen became the first U.S. girl to break 10 minutes in the 3,200 outdoors and only the third to do it indoors or out. Her time would have placed her fifth in the City Section boys’ championships Thursday. “I really wanted [the national record] badly,” she said.
