Ex-O.C. Agent Arrested

LAGUNA HILLS — A former Orange County insurance agent has been arrested on charges of stealing more than $400,000 in insurance premiums, the state Department of Insurance announced Wednesday.
Melvin Maurice Katz, 59, of Mel Katz Insurance Services, is being held in Orange County Jail after being returned from Florida, where he had been serving time for jumping bail on an unrelated case, insurance officials said.
The former Laguna Hills resident was arrested for allegedly selling fraudulent workers’ compensation and business liability insurance policies. He was charged with 36 counts of forgery, grand theft and embezzlement of insurance premiums from consumers and insurance companies. His bail was set at $500,000.
