Update / Follow-up on the news : Effort to Prevent New Pharmacy Fails
- Share via
Owners of a local pharmacy have lost their bid to stop a Walgreen Rxpress drive-through pharmacy from opening nearby.
The city’s Planning Commission in March approved the Walgreen, a 1,976-square-foot store to be built at Newport Avenue and 1st Street.
But the decision was strongly protested by owners of the nearby Tustin Community Pharmacy, who filed an appeal. Among other concerns, the owners feared that traffic from the drive-through lane would block traffic and restrict access to their store.
Traffic studies by the city, however, did not support that premise, and City Council members said they felt the relevant issues were free enterprise and fair competition.
“I feel bad for the pharmacy that’s been there since 1965,” Mayor Tracy Wills Worley said in denying the appeal. “But we can’t restrict competition. I don’t see any reason not to uphold this deal.”
