THE ALL NEW RUNNER’S HANDBOOK by Bob Glover, Jack Shepherd & Shelly-lynn Florence Glover (Penguin: $17.95; 726 pp., paperback original). Initially published in 1978, the third and newly expanded edition of this best-selling guide remains an essential book for aspiring, beginning and intermediate runners. Although virtually all of the information it contains is available elsewhere, the authors do a noteworthy job of organizing the material into a readily comprehensible whole. Chapters cover all aspects of running, from recreational jogging to marathon training. Unlike many sports enthusiasts, the authors warn of the dangers of allowing running to become an obsession, rather than one part of a well-balanced life.
