Cincinnati Reds left-hander Pete Schourek will miss the rest of the season after undergoing exploratory surgery on his elbow, during which doctors tightened a ligament and removed scar tissue.

Schourek, 27, was 18-7 with a 3.22 earned-run average last season. He was 4-5 with a 6.01 ERA in 13 games this season.

Frank Thomas of the Chicago White Sox, recovering from a stress fracture in his left foot, said he has been watching cable television and spending time with his new daughter, who is just more than a week old.

“I’m just being a normal citizen,” Thomas said. “It’s really weird to watch a game on TV. It’s the first time I’ve been on the DL and it’s tough. I slept 14 hours one day and now I’m well rested and going crazy.”

The fracture was revealed by a bone scan July 10, and the two-time Most Valuable Player was supposed to be out a minimum of three weeks. X-rays taken Thursday showed the healing process was going as expected, team doctors said.
