A 2 1/2-year old boy was killed this week after being struck by a Los Angeles County Fire Department lifeguard vehicle on Santa Monica Beach, a department spokesman said Friday.
A lieutenant, whom the department declined to identify, was driving at about 10 mph four blocks north of the Santa Monica Pier to speak with a tower lifeguard about a nonemergency incident when the accident occurred at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The child, whose name was not released, was taken to UCLA Medical Center, where he died.
The lieutenant has been granted a leave of absence. The incident remains under investigation by the Fire Department.
