A 39-year-old woman died when her car veered sharply into oncoming lanes, hopped a sidewalk and tumbled down into a flood control channel, police said.
Donna Kirkpatrick of Huntington Beach was alone at the time of the 10 p.m. Thursday crash and no other vehicles were involved, Police Lt. Luis Ochoa said.
The cause of the accident is under investigation, he said.
Witnesses told police Kirkpatrick’s car had been northbound on Gothard Street near Murdy Circle when the vehicle crossed the southbound lanes, rode up on the curb, clipped a fire hydrant and crashed through a chain-link fence before landing in the concrete bed of the channel, Ochoa said.
Kirkpatrick was pronounced dead on arrival at Columbia Huntington Beach Hospital and Medical Center.
