U.S. Shows Promise in Routing Romania

After a few uneven performances, the U.S. water polo team demonstrated why it considers itself a medal contender.
Three-time Olympian Mike Evans scored three goals as the Americans (3-1) defeated Romania, 10-5, in their most convincing performance.
The U.S. team (3-1) will play Croatia today for second place in Pool B, but is guaranteed a spot in the quarterfinals.

There was blood in the pool as Vladimir Vujasinovic was punched in the face by Germany’s Uwe Sterzik and left bleeding from a cut to the nose, but the three-time champion Yugoslavians prevailed, 9-8. . . . In another Pool A match, Russia eliminated the Netherlands, 10-5, and Hungary edged defending silver medalist Spain, 8-7, as both remained alive in Pool A. . . . In Pool B, undefeated Italy, which beat Greece, 10-8, was joined by Croatia, which beat Ukraine, 16-8. The winner of today’s game between Greece and Ukraine will join them in quarterfinals.
