2nd Amendment and Gun Research
Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership apparently equate “responsible” with anything that suits its purpose. Dr. Timothy Wheeler, project director for that group, excoriates the Centers for Disease Control for “pushing an agenda for gun control” (letter, July 19), while he has apparently forgotten the “do no harm” part of the Hippocratic Oath. Ignoring the dangers of guns does harm.
Firearms, as a means of dispensing maiming and death, are no less a disease than malaria-laden mosquitoes. Wheeler and his medical cohort don’t think this disease needs control.
Rhetoric about taxes, 2nd Amendment rights and “bias” against guns is just a lot of smoke and mirrors. When doctors interfere with research on this epidemic, they are exacerbating the disease.

* Either Wheeler is awfully naive or living in a world of his own if he thinks the National Rifle Assn. has to present testimony before Congress in order to influence a vote.
