Montez Joins Northridge Baseball Staff

Cal State Northridge has hired Tim Montez, an assistant at UC Santa Barbara the past three seasons, as assistant baseball coach.
Montez, 35, will be working with pitchers and catchers. He replaces Dan Cowgill, who resigned after the season.
Montez was an assistant at Montclair Prep from 1990 to ’93 and pitched at Pepperdine, winning 20 games from 1979 to ’84.
“We’re extremely happy to have Tim aboard,” Coach Mike Batesole said. “He is a an established Division I pitching coach who has been a major contributor in class programs.”

Catcher Scot Sealy of the JetHawks has been promoted to double A and will report to Port City, N.C., immediately. Sealy was batting .272 with nine home runs and 49 runs batted in.
The club also announced that infielder Shawn Buhner will come off the disabled list to take Sealy’s spot on the roster.

Joe Gordon, from Simi Valley High, has signed with the Grand Forks, N.D., Varmints of the independent Prairie League. Gordon hit a home run Wednesday in his first at-bat with the club.
Gordon’s brother, Zachary, who played third base at Royal High this season, will attend Pepperdine.
Tennis
Brandis Braverman has reached the semifinals in the girls’ 18-and-under singles division of the U.S. Tennis Assn. junior national championships in San Jose.
Eighth-seeded Braverman, 16, who recently moved from the Valley to Newport Beach but still trains in Encino, defeated Holly Parkinson of Houston, 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, at the Almaden Valley Athletic Club.
Today Braverman faces defending champion and top-seeded Lilia Osterloh of Canal Winchester, Ohio.
In boys’ 14, Nicholas Weiss of Calabasas defeated Brad Prigmore of Wichita Falls, Texas, 6-1, 6-1, to reach the quarterfinals.
In doubles, defending champions Mike and Bob Bryan of Camarillo advanced to the boys’ 18 final with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Keith Brill of Columbia, S.C. and Geoff Abrams of Newport Beach. The Bryans, who were idle in singles play, will each play quarterfinal matches today.
